Welcome to VickyProofed, My Editing Website!

A Website for Editing and Tutoring Services.

I've been talking about editing as a profession for a long time. For some reason, I never focused on it as a career path until now. When I started college and chose English as my major, I figured that I would go this route eventually. I even took literary magazine classes and joined the editing crews at each school I attended: De Anza Community College, CSU East Bay, and Saint Mary's College of California. It's a good thing one of my mottos is "better late than never."

As a child, I loved reading and would always notice a grammar or content error in my books. I would point it out to everyone and say, "How could someone miss this glaring error?" I even started becoming a "grammar nazi" with my work and others' as I read and learned more. Probably to the point of annoyance for some. But for me, it was a point of pride because I easily understood what others deemed arduous and vexing.

So time moved on and I attended college, still reading and still pointing out those "glaring" errors in published works, even textbooks. But college helped me learn that being a stickler for grammar was not the way. I started working as a writing tutor in my second quarter at De Anza, and the tutor trainings and English grammar rules showed me just how difficult English can be for people who aren't me. All of the rules and contradictions to the rules are enough to drive anyone mad, especially comma rules.

In academic and professional writing, proper grammar matters the most. It is in these forms of writing that clear and concise communication is essential, and proper grammar is part of being clear. Whether this written communication is a class essay, a proposal, or an email, the grammar is just as important as the content. This is part of what I learned in college and it's the one area of writing that I view with a strict, grammatical eye.

Once I began taking creative writing classes, I learned what it means to "know the rules before you break them." While proper grammar isn't necessary in creative writing, it's easier to break grammar rules once they're known. And when a writer intentionally breaks grammar rules, instead of unknowingly, the prose can be manipulated into an artistic, lyrical form that envelopes and entrances the reader, daring them to read more. A writer can even use broken rules as part of their theme or plot (Cormac McCarthy's The Road is a great example of this technique).

The point is that English is difficult and I happen to be great at it. Not all writers need or want to know grammar rules, and that's where people like me come in! With my experiences in teaching, tutoring, and writing, coupled with my love for English and its rules, I can help transform any piece of writing into a beautifully edited work of professionalism or art.

Now that you know who I am and the gist of how I got here, let me help you with your work. Check out my portfolio for more examples of my edited and written works. Also, don't forget to follow me on social media! Links below!
